NEW YORK — A security lapse has exposed data from millions of Verizon customers, leaking names, addresses and personal identification numbers, or PINs, according to a security researcher.

Verizon (VZ) said 6 million customers were affected, but the company said that none of the information made it into the wrong hands. The company said the only person who got access to the data was the researcher who brought the leak to its attention.

It is unclear, however, how Verizon determined that information.

Anyone who had the web address could download the data, ZDNet reported.

Chris Vickery, director of cyber risk research at UpGuard, found the leak in late June. UpGuard said the problem stemmed from a cloud server that a third-party vendor had misconfigured.

Exposing just two pieces of customer information, such as a name and phone number, can be potentially disastrous because a third party could use that information to break into someone's account. Justin Williams, an AT&T customer, was the victim of such a scam last week, per ZDNet. He ended up having money withdrawn from his bank account, he said. (The phone company later repaid him.)

Verizon's breach is not a wireless issue, but is related to a residential and small business wireline self-service call center portal, the company said.

Gartner analyst Avivah Litan said the issue comes down to human error and it doesn't make sense to blame cloud service providers like Amazon and Google. Matching so-called metadata about phone call histories, it is possible to know that the two people are connected, that they met on this day, and the approximate duration of the meeting. Doe pays for the drink with a debit card, and so the bank records the time, location, establishment, and purchase. The federal government has had access to bank records since the early 2000s, and debit card transactions are included.

Let's say Doe and the people he communicated with online innocently used some trigger words that make security authorities pay attention. Perhaps one of Doe's friends corresponds, in the course of business, with someone suspected of having terrorist ties. That puts Doe within two degrees of that person and, so, is in a social network of heightened interest. Doe watched some videos strongly critical of the government. All this data gets aggregated and it never goes away.

Inmates take guards hostage in Oklahoma prison riot, officials say

HINTON, Oklahoma -- A prison riot initially involving hundreds of inmates broke out Sunday night at the Great Plains Correctional Facility in Hinton, reports Oklahoma.

The Caddo County Sheriff's Office said approximately 250 to 300 inmates took to the yard and refused to go back inside the prison.

Caddo County Sheriff Lennis Miller said prisoners, some toting bats and pipes, took two guards hostage at the outset of the riot, but that both were freed and uninjured. It wasn't immediately clear how the inmates got the weapons, how they were able to get inside one of the buildings or what prompted the riot.

The prison has several layers of security fences and sources told us the rioting prisoners made it past one to two of those fences. But authorities reassured nearby residents that the prison's perimeter hadn't been breached.

Miller said authorities used pepper spray and stun grenades to corral inmates into a soccer field and an exercise yard. The riot ended early Monday after roughly eight hours, authorities said.
Pablo Paez, a spokesman for The GEO Group, said in a statement Monday that the prison was secured without serious injury to staff, inmates or law officers. He said the Federal Bureau of Prisons and other agencies are reviewing the incident. The prison houses about 1,900 inmates.

Miller says no officers were hurt, but that some inmates were taken to hospitals with unspecified injuries.

Oklahoma's prison directors have been warning for years about potential problems inside the state's overcrowded and underfunded correctional facilities, many of which are old state schools or hospitals that have been converted into prisons. Inside most facilities, recreation rooms, classrooms and other program space have all been converted into makeshift housing units to accompany more inmates.

In a presentation to the prison system's governing board last month, Director Joe Allbaugh said state prisons have a rated operating capacity of 17,902 but were currently housing more than 26,000 inmates.

"You can only push this balloon so far," Allbaugh warned the panel during the presentation. "Something is going to pop."

In September 2015, four inmates were stabbed to death at a private prison in Cushing in a fight between rival prison gangs that left three other inmates wounded.

Last year, a knife fight among inmates at a crowded housing unit at the Mack Alford Correctional Center in southeast Oklahoma left one inmate dead and three others wounded.

A correctional officer suffered minor injuries in December after a fight broke out among a small group of inmates at the North Fork Correctional Facility in western Oklahoma. A riot at the same facility in 2011 resulted in 46 inmates being sent to the infirmary or hospitals after fighting erupted among black and Hispanic inmates.
Tenant unearths skull wrapped in blanket at home where woman vanished in 1988

SPANISH FORK, Utah -- A tenant found human remains buried in the backyard storage cellar of a Utah home where a woman who went missing nearly three decades ago once lived.

Police say 28-year-old Peggy Sue Case was reported missing from the Spanish Fork home in 1988. On Monday, a tenant living there noticed sagging in the cellar's dirt floor and decided to dig with a friend, curious because he heard from a neighbor about Case's disappearance, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

The two uncovered an apparent human skull wrapped in a blanket and plastic mesh, buried about 18 inches deep, according to the paper. They called police around 10:15 a.m.

The skull will be taken to the medical examiner's office for identification.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Case's boyfriend Michael Kufrin is considered a person of interest in the disappearance, which Spanish Fork police say was extensively investigated. The couple lived together at the home when Case was last seen at a hot-tub party they both attended on July 9, 1988 in Payson, the paper reports.

Police said they suspected foul play, but had no evidence of a crime.

Spanish Fork detective Carl Johnston told the paper witnesses reported hostility between the two when Johnston accused Case of flirting with some men at the party. The two left together, and Case was never seen again. Kufrin reportedly called Case's workplace to report her sick after the party, and the next day told Case's employers she had gone out of town to buy a car.

Suspicious because the behavior was unlike her, co-workers reported Case missing July 15, 1988. Kufrin initially claimed Case was staying in contact with him by phone, but he later stopped cooperating with police. He reportedly served time in an unrelated attempted theft case before moving back to his home state of Illinois, according to the Tribune.

Johnston, who initially investigated the disappearance, told the Tribune that if the remains are identified as Case, "that's a great thing for her family to have some closure." Case's remains would "add some new light on some of the elements" already discovered by police, Johnston told the paper.

Police say they know where Kufrin may be and they want to talk to him.

Investigators say that police dug through the soil in the cellar shortly after her disappearance, but didn't find any evidence.

HOW TO TRACE A MISSING OR STOLEN PHONE

If you lose your mobile phone, you can trace it without going to the police.

Most of us always fear that our phones may be stolen at any time.

Each phone carries a unique
IMEI no. i.e. International Mobile Equipment Identity No which can be used to track it anywhere in the world.

This is how it works:

1. Dial *#06# from your mobile.

2. Your mobile phone shows a unique 15 digit.

3. Note down this number at a secure place except in your mobile phone itself as this is the number which will help trace your phone in case of theft.

4. Once stolen, just E-mail this 15 digit IMEI No. to cop@vsnl.net with details as stated below:

Your name:____________________
Address:______________________
Phone model:_________________
Make:_________________________
Last used No.:_________________
E-mail for communication:_____
Missed date:___________________
IMEI No :_______________________

5.Your Mobile will be traced within next 24 hours via a complex system of GPRS and internet, You will find where your hand set is being operated and the new user's No. will be sent to your email.
6. After this, you can inform the Police with the details you now have.
